Train ride

Caleb has an interest in cars and trains. Last Saturday we decided to take a trip on Caltrain up to San Carlos. From Mountain View it's about a 25 minute train ride. We got to the station early to buy tickets and not feel rushed. As the train was approaching Caleb got a little apprehensive and did not want to get on the train. So Jamie scooped him up and we boarded the train.

When we got to San Carlos we shopped a little. We got Caleb some new sneakers at the kids shoe store (size 9!) and a couple of books at the children's bookstore. It happened to be story time when we got there but Caleb was more interested in the train table. After that, we went to lunch at a Greek restaurant. I looked at the wrong schedule on the way out of the train station so we arrived back at the station 20 minutes early.

In the end, we think Caleb enjoyed it but like everything else he doesn't take to new things quickly. But it was still a fun family adventure and a lovely way to spend a Saturday morning.

Here's Caleb waiting for the train. He doesn't look too happy but he was quite excited when I gave him a "ticket".

On the train he didn't want to sit in the seat by himself.

Lucas - 5 months

In the blink of an eye it seems Lucas turned into a baby. I can't call him a newborn anymore. He's way more interactive and is starting to grab at things on his playmat. He can now roll over from back to tummy pretty well and has rolled from tummy to back. He's still wakes up in the middle of the night to nurse. The past 10 days or so he wakes up in the middle of the night and freaks out that he's on his tummy and only the pacifier consoles him. The hard part of that is the pacifier frequently pops out of his mouth and he is unable to locate it and put it back in. We're working on that.

I've also been thinking about when to start solid foods. If I'm holding Lucas and trying to drink something he is grabbing at the cup. Yesterday I was trying to eat some chicken and he actually got a piece of chicken in his hand. I guess he's tired of sitting in the bumbo or lying on his playmat while the rest of us eat dinner.

I'm anxiously waiting for his first tooth to cut through. He is teething like crazy. Constant drool and hands in his mouth. He's back to taking less than an hour naps. I'm hoping that changes soon though.

It is really great to see Caleb and Lucas together. Lucas constantly watches Caleb and Caleb is very helpful. I can ask Caleb to put a pacifier in Lucas' mouth, get a "Lucas" diaper, throw away diapers. I am starting to see some possessiveness. Lucas had a shaker and Caleb said "mine" and wanted to take it out of Lucas' hand. I had to tell him that it was Lucas' turn to play with the shaker and he can have it when Lucas is done.

snapshot of Caleb

2 years + 2 months. Caleb started preschool and so far it's been great. Drop off is literally that. I'll say, "Bye Caleb I'm going now" He immediately responds "Bye Mommy" with a wave and doesn't even glance my way. He clearly loves the art table since I pick up dozens of artwork in his cubby every day. To my surprise he takes an hour nap at preschool.

Current favorites:
Food: raisins
Activities: Dancing, singing and banging a drum that his nanny brought back from Peru while marching around the house
TV show: Wonderpets, Blues Clues
Books: From Head to Toe
Toys: anything that will make a mess
Shoes: Crocs
Clothes: Still the matching set of pajamas
Phrase: NO! I do it! and "I want to help you" which translates to "help me"

Lucas Lion, Mommy Lion

Caleb has an assortment of animal figurines. In one set, there's a baby and adult animal. Caleb used to refer to them as baby and Mommy . In some cases we have 3 different sizes of a particular animal and so sometimes there's a Daddy and a Mommy. Today he referred to the baby lion as 'Lucas lion'.

My First Ouch Report

It'll probably the first of many.

When I picked up Caleb today I noticed a blue piece of paper on the table where they leave notices and other similar things. I thought oh that's new. What is it.. I saw Ouch Report and thought oh poor kid. Then I read the name of the kid. OH crap that's MY kid!

NO! I do it

I probably hear this phrase from Caleb a hundred times a day. It starts first thing in the morning when I change his diaper. I attempt to throw the diaper in the diaper pail and I hear "NO! I do it" or when I try to pull up his pants/short over his bottom - "NO! I do it" It can be funny sometimes but the times when you are in a hurry having to stop and wait for a toddler to try to put on his shoes or buckle his car seat can really wear you down. Aahh but that is life with a 2 year old and life is great!
