Ants

Today as Caleb and his nanny were walking out the door to go to the park, he was a bit clingy and didn't want to leave. I was saying bye and have fun. The nanny would try to coax him away and said let's go to the park. But he still was trying to get me to pick him up. Then she said, come on Caleb let's go to the park and see the ants. I don't know if this is new or not but that's when Caleb turned and said bye to me. I just chuckled.

Christmas Family Picture

Jamie and I rarely get a chance to take a family picture. We went to a wedding on Saturday and there was a big christmas tree in the hotel lobby. It was a perfect chance to take a family photo with a Christmas tree in the background and all of us dressed up.

Here's some fun pics from the Photobooth at the wedding. I kept looking at the screen instead of the camera which is why I'm looking down in most of the pics. I love the picture of Jamie looking at Caleb. It kinda looks like Caleb is trying to get away but he could be trying to get away from Jamie's beard.. even I do that sometimes :)

Santa - round 2

I took Caleb to go see Santa at Valley Fair mall today. The same Santa and setup as last year. Oh what a different experience it was. Caleb saw Santa and was curious. The Santa tried to bribe him with a candy cane but it didn't work since Caleb didn't even know what that was. Santa even had me sit on his lap to show that it was okay. That didn't work. They asked if I wanted to be in the picture with him and I was not prepared to take such a momentous photo.

Going into the experience I knew that Caleb wouldn't take to Santa right away. He needs time to warm up to people. And to be perfectly honest, I wanted to have one of those awesome pictures of my kid crying on Santa's lap. Well I guess I got my Christmas wish!

This is not a discussion Caleb...

We've been pretty much doing the same bath/bedtime routine since Caleb was probably 3 or 4 months old. Since he clearly knows the routine he seriously tries to stall. 7pm rolls around and I say to him "It's bathtime Caleb" He actually responds, "No". I tell him, "This isn't a discussion Caleb." After his bath, he gets into his pajamas and we read Goodnight Moon. Some days he grabs the book and gives it to me. But a lot of times, he tries to play or run around his room. I say, "It's night night time Caleb" He responds, "No" or even whimpers a little. He has tried to trick us by saying he wants something to eat or drink. Since I don't want my baby to be hungry I go get it from the kitchen which gives Caleb the opportunity to leave his bedroom and run to the family room and try to play with some toys. When I pick him back up and try to give him food or water he refuses it. Sneaky little boy! He also tries to avoid bedtime by pointing to more books for me to read. We always read "Goodnight Moon" And almost on cue as soon as I read "Good night stars..." the whimpering cry starts.

Will the day ever come where he doesn't cry when I place him in the crib/bed and close the door?

the sausage bun in the oven is halfway done

20 weeks down....20 more weeks to go. I had an OB appointment today. Short and sweet. The results from my second blood test came out fine. There's a low risk of having a baby with Down's Syndrome. I was also able to get my H1N1 vaccine shot. Oh and I gained 5 pounds. Pregnancy is the only time that I'll EVER be happy to hear that I gained weight. The nurse was saying that my OB would say something if he ever thought I was gaining too much weight. He would remind me to get up and move around for exercise and to eat healthy. I said getting up and moving around is not a problem with an almost 17 month old son... It's the eating healthy that I'm having a hard time with this second pregnancy. Total opposite of the first pregnancy. Back then I ate organic vegetables and meat and actually tried to count how much protein I was getting per day. Some days I don't eat lunch until mid afternoon and I hate to admit it is fast food a lot of those times. An In&Out chocolate/vanilla shake has calcium... that's good for the baby right?

Imaginary friend

So for a while now Caleb says "Nonny" (NAW-NEE). I don't know what he's really trying to say because he can say "Mommy". But I think because I've responded to it he says it to call me.

Today he was saying it again repeatedly. And I said, "Who is Nonny? Is Nonny your imaginary friend?" He paused a bit and replied, "Yeah" which just made me laugh out loud.

A few moments later I repeated the question and got the same response.

Caleb's very own Mary Poppins

So Caleb has a part time nanny that takes care of him 17 hours a week spread over 3 days. The nanny allows me to work, run errands without dragging Caleb with me, and on occasion some ME time.

When she first started about 3 months ago, we would go answer the door, he would see her and suddenly cling to me. The nanny would pry him from my arms and go to the playroom and I would go to the office, close the door and work. Minutes later I would hear him laughing and playing. But it would be the same routine every morning she came.

I got worried that he didn't like her and/or they just weren't bonding.

These days, the doorbell rings and he runs to the door, sees the nanny and doesn't cry when she picks him up and goes to the playroom. Just a minute ago, I left the office door open as they were leaving for the park. I yelled out "bye Caleb, have fun" He runs back to the office door waves and says bye and runs out the door again smiling.

It was so cute. But now I have a complex... maybe he has more fun with the nanny than with me? In any case I think he's happy.

I have no pictures of Caleb and the nanny but thought I'd add a random picture of him anyways.

cradling and football

I have to mention 2 things before I tell this story. 1) Jamie watches football with Caleb. and 2) I've been trying to teach Caleb the sign for "baby" which basically is the motion of rocking a baby back and forth.

This morning Caleb and I were in the playroom. Caleb was pulling books out of the bookshelf to read. He pulled out his "USC 101" book and turned to the Sports & Athletics page of the book that displays a bunch of balls - Caleb's favorite thing in the world.

I said, "Do you like watching football on tv with Daddy?"
Caleb, "Yeah"

He then picked up the remote control that's in the playroom.

I said, "There's no tv in here Caleb. Do you want to go watch football?"
Caleb, "Yeah"

He then leaves the room and goes to the family room and points to the tv. I turn on the tv and turn it to a football game. He's sitting on the couch for a bit. On the tv, a player just ran in the end zone and scored a touchdown.

Caleb then says, "baby" and also does the sign for it
I said, "where's the baby?"

Luckily for instant replay I caught the play again and my guess is Caleb saw the football player holding a football in his arm much like how you would hold a baby in your arms as well as how you sign "baby".

Just thought this was funny to get a glimpse of how their little brains work.

Soccer player in the making

Today I took Caleb to a park and remembered to bring a ball. Most of the time he ran around the grass kicking the ball. Also at the park was a brother and sister kicking a soccer ball to each other. Caleb would stop and watch them every once in a while. One time I noticed the girl set the ball down, walk a few steps back and then run toward the ball to kick it. Later I saw Caleb do the same thing. It was the cutest thing!

Here's a video of him kicking the ball around. Towards the end he got distracted by the dog that was running around. That dog had gotten a little too close to Caleb earlier and he got scared.

16 month update

What can I say about Caleb that I haven't said before? He's a fun and funny little guy.
  • He STILL loves balls and balloons. He can throw a ball pretty well and loves to throw and chase after the ball. It can be entertaining.
  • He's picking up a little Spanish from his Spanish speaking nanny. I've asked him "Do you want water?" He'll respond "agua agua agua" and point to his straw cup of water.
  • Anything round to him is either 1) ball 2) balloon or 3) moon.
  • He is transitioning to one nap (much to my dismay).
  • The other day he pointed to my belly and said baby which surprised me because I haven't emphasized the new baby is coming a whole lot. Probably was a fluke.
  • Taking a bath is a hit or miss. Some days he likes it and others he won't sit down.
  • He had his second haircut and hated every minute of it.
  • He can climb on the couch and go up small steps standing. Going down steps he'll reach for my hand for help.
  • He likes to turn light switches on/off and press buttons
  • He can sign milk, more, please, and eat. We're working on thank you.
  • He can say no, yeah, uh-oh, up, bird, honey, mommy, daddy, ball, moon, balloon, shoes, and bubbles.
  • He loves to draw lines with chalk.
  • He can be shy at times (like mom!) and usually needs a little time to warm up.
I'm amazed at how much he understands. Definitely way more than he can say. I love watching his personality come through more and more each day.

Caleb's table

A friend of mine bought an IKEA toddler table and painted it with Milk Paint. After seeing her results I figured I could do it too. I chose a green colored paint and mixed it in with white.

It doesn't have decals like my friend's table and if you look close you'll see all the reasons why I shouldn't be a professional painter or how I'm far from being Martha Stewart but I'm happy with what I've done.

I will bet in 2 years time, the table will be unrecognizable

Baby#2

Baby Breslow #2 is due April 20th! I've been asked if this was a planned pregnancy and I have to say yes and no. Yes, because we did start trying and no because it happened faster than we thought it would. Caleb and this baby will be 21 months apart. I'm 16 weeks pregnant and feel really good. My belly has already popped out and am already wearing maternity clothes. The big difference in my pregnancy this time around is I had really bad food aversions. I didn't want to eat, nothing seemed appetizing, and I spit out a lot of food. Thank goodness that phase has passed.

Since this isn't my first pregnancy I thought I didn't have to do belly shots but I was convinced otherwise. Here's how I look now

Hawaii 2009

Since the opening of the store in late July, Jamie has not spent 3 consecutive nights at home and has been working LOONG hours. Needless to say he was in need of a vacation and some serious family time. So off to Hawaii we go...

When it comes to vacations Jamie does ALL the planning. I just come for the ride. He books hotels, plans the day's itinerary, and decides where to eat. This time around, he didn't plan anything and so each day we decided what we were going to do. A lot of times we relaxed at the hotel. We stayed at the Halekulani hotel in Waikiki. Very nice hotel that I believe catered to the Japanese clientele. We tried our best to keep to some kind of nap schedule but Caleb was having none of that. In fact, he ended up sleeping with us on the bed. It was actually quite nice.

It took a couple of days for us to get into vacation mode. We took Caleb to the Waikiki Aquarium, The Kahala resort (the place we stayed at 5 years ago on our mini-moon) to see the dolphins, and to Hanauma Bay where Jamie snorkeled, Caleb played in the sand, and I sat on a beach towel. Caleb did not like the water. He liked playing with the sand and threw lots of sand around. It took a couple of days to fully rid his head of sand. We drove to North Shore one day and met up with some friends at Giovanni's Shrimp Truck and then went to Matsumoto's for shave ice. All in all, the vacation was great.

Gilroy Gardens

It was a disaster! Well.. maybe not a disaster but certainly not the fun day that I thought it would be.

The day didn't start off too great. Caleb woke up early this morning - roughly around 6:15am. I took him to The Little Gym thinking that a class would tire him out so that he could take his morning nap on the drive down to Gilroy. Well that plan failed. Instead Caleb paid a lot of attention to what my niece Allyson was doing in the car and stayed awake the whole time.

The first thing we did when we got into Gilroy Gardens was go on the merry-go-round. I tried to put him on a horse but he wanted nothing to do with it. So we sat on a bench and enjoyed the ride. It was pleasant and I thought it would get better from there.

The next ride we went on was one where the kid goes by himself. It was a goldfish ride that goes up and down as it goes around in a circle. While waiting I picked up Caleb and kept asking him if he wanted to go on the ride. He was pointing to it and said "yeah" I thought okay, he'll be fine. He wasn't antsy or overly excited like my niece but it's also the first time he's ever been to an amusement park. Our turn came up and I put him in a goldfish. He fussed a bit but seemed to be okay when I buckled him in.

When the ride started he looked a bit startled and cried. The operator asked if I wanted to stop the ride and take him out. I started to wave and clap (like all the other moms) and say "yay Caleb" After a few seconds he calmed down and just looked like he was holding on to the sides of the goldfish. I thought great... he's getting used to it and maybe enjoys it a little. Well as soon as that ride stopped, the meltdown began. He wanted OUT of that goldfish and unfortunately the operator had to come around to each goldfish and use some sort of pin to undo the buckle. And the evil operator decides she's gonna undo Caleb's buckle LAST. GGRR. So I'm standing there helpless and trying to console Caleb. He's probably thinking "Get me out! Why aren't you getting me out!?!?" I must admit this all happens in roughly a minute but still...

By this time it's around noon so I tell my sister that Caleb probably is hungry and we should go eat. Lunch went okay. He didn't eat a whole lot of his cheese pizza. We went to this farm area where they had a petting zoo. All Caleb wanted was for me to carry him all around. By then it was about 1pm and he had been up for more than 6 hours and NEEDED a nap. I told my sister that I was going to stroll him around to see if he'll fall asleep.

I strolled around the park and much to my relief Caleb fell asleep!! I think this was only the 2nd time he's ever fallen asleep in his stroller (not counting when he was a newborn and slept all day) I parked myself on a bench near a waterfall thinking the waterfall was just like the white noise machine I have at home.

My iPhone and Facebook could only entertain me for so long... so I got a text from my sister saying she was at the kiddie rides and about to go on a firetruck ride. When I met up with her Caleb woke up a few minutes after that. I guess something woke him up (he must be a light sleeper like me) I checked the time... he only took a half hour nap. :( I guess I should have entertained myself more on that bench near the waterfall.

I tried putting Caleb in the firetruck ride and a racecar ride. Wouldn't do it. My sister suggested we go on a couple of rides that I can ride with Caleb. We went on a ride called the Artichoke Dip and it went okay. But he certainly wasn't thrilled and didn't want to go again. I tried to take him on a similar ride called the Apple & Worm but as soon as I pulled the bar down he wanted OUT. I had to call the operator over and ask her to release the bar so we could climb out. It was such a bummer. We tried to go to the playground structure but all Caleb wanted was for me to carry him. By that time I was over the whole amusement park. He wasn't his usual happy self and I think it's because he was tired and needed a longer nap. Or maybe he just isn't into roller coasters and amusement parks. Or maybe he was a little too young for it. I'll try again next year. :)

My niece Allyson (who turned 23 months today) had a great time. She couldn't wait for her turns for the ride and enjoyed every single minute. She fell asleep in the stroller as we were getting ready to leave the park.

Honey

Lately Caleb says "ON-EY" sometimes. At first I thought he was trying to say "Nanny" since he just got a new nanny a few weeks ago. I also thought he was just confusing it with "Mommy" He would say on-ey and I would reply Mommy? And then he would say Mommy.

Well just yesterday Jamie and I finally figured it out... We call each other "Honey". I was calling for Jamie and saying "honey" repeatedly. Caleb then said "ON-EY" What an AHA moment it was! He's been trying to say "Honey" because he hears it from Jamie and me!

The picture below has nothing to do with the story above but I think it's cute. Jamie and I went to Saul's in Berkeley (the only Jewish deli in the Bay Area) and Caleb went crazy for the matzoh ball soup. He couldn't get enough of it.

Fun Family Day

Last Wednesday Jamie took a day off... the first in about a month. Of course we had to do something fun. We took Caleb back to the SJ Children's Discovery Museum. The first time we went, Caleb just started to crawl so there was only so much he could do. Now that he's walking and much more active he really enjoyed the museum. There was a Curious George exhibit. He went crazy for the little golf balls in there. We also went to the infant/toddler area called the Wonder Cabinet. We put a smock on him and waited to see what he would do. I thought he looked really cute in a smock.

Basically he held the paintbrush and dipped it in the paint container. The art you see on the wall was done by Jamie ;)

We liked the museum so much we ended up getting a yearly membership. We figure we'd go at least two more times in the next year to justify the cost.

13 months

Caleb turned 13 months yesterday. He is getting funner and funner everyday. I love watching him discover the world around him and learn new things.
  • He can walk but he prefers to crawl or do hybrid walk/crawl which looks like he is groveling. It's amazing he hasn't skinned up his knees.
  • He can stack blocks.
  • He is drinking whole milk out of a straw.
  • He is more interested in what is on my plate than what's on his tray. Case in point: He kept pointing to a piece of toast that I was holding even though he had the other half of the toast in his hand.
  • Because of above point, he has tasted french fries and loves them
  • He points to Raider when we ask "Where's Raider?". If you ask "Where's Mommy" he doesn't do anything.
  • He threw his first head and feet banging temper tantrum. My only regret was not capturing it on film.
  • He dances or should I say he rocks back and forth when he hears music
  • He can say ball (ba), momma, daddy. I think he's also said kitty and all done.
  • He knows where his tummy is.
  • He is a climber. He can climb onto the bathroom sink via the bathtub ledge.
  • He has FOMO. Fear Of Missing Out. Because of this disorder he is unable to nap in other places besides home.
  • He loves to run around naked or just in a diaper after bath time.

Milk... it does a body good

More Blocks

I got this toy at a neighborhood garage sale a couple of months ago. The blocks have holes in them and you're supposed to stack them on the pegs.

So yesterday Caleb stacked some blocks... today he started to put the blocks with holes onto the pegs. He liked to clap each time he inserted one even when he didn't do it right and the block fell. He even tried to stack blocks without holes. Oh well! At least it's a start...

Block Building

I got Caleb some wooden blocks months ago. I stack the blocks and Caleb always knocks them down. He usually bangs them together or puts them in his mouth. Today at a playdate Caleb took the blocks and stacked three of them! I thought that was cool :)

I wanted a picture so I got out his blocks so he could do it again.

Baby Sign Language?

So I took a baby sign language class a little while ago and learned a bunch of signs but the ones I am most consistent with are 'milk', 'more', and 'eat/food'. I'd like to believe that Caleb is able to sign 'milk' and 'more' but you be judge...

On a different note... Caleb *LOVED* the salmon I gave him for dinner. He is a messy eater (he is his father's son after all!) but hopefully he'll learn to be neater. By dinnertime I don't care how messy he gets since bath time is immediately after dinner.

new doorknob?

Earlier this month I realized Caleb grew taller. I found this out when I was in his closet putting stuff away. Usually he bangs on the door waiting for me to come out. That time he got on his tippy toes, reached the door handle and opened the door. He was so happy and proud of himself too that I couldn't help but smile and think it was cute.

In the video we were in the playroom and he was more interested in what was going on outside.

Monkeying Around

Caught in the action!

For the past few weeks, Caleb has been able to stand on his own and has taken a few steps here and there. He's doing it more and more often the past few days but he definitely gets around faster crawling.

His actual first steps were a couple of weeks ago but today I was able to catch a couple of steps on camera. It's not the most graceful and he looks like he gets up and trips over himself but it's hard to get this stuff on camera when he doesn't do it consistently.

Caleb's Birthday Party

Today was Caleb's First Birthday Party... I had a blast seeing friends and family and watching all the kids play and run around our backyard. Caleb was such the party animal that he didn't take an afternoon nap (despite our best efforts) and passed out at 6pm.

I know Caleb won't remember his first birthday party but he only turns one once.

First Birthday Eve

For the past week or so I've been in such a nostalgic state of mind. Around this time last year I was anxiously waiting the arrival of Caleb. A random list of my thoughts on the eve of Caleb's first birthday.

  • June 30th (my due date) had come and gone. I was a bit bummed that he was going to be late.
  • Jamie was worried that Caleb would be born on HIS birthday.
  • Jamie thought it would be cool to have him on the 4th of July because then he would always have fireworks on his birthday.
  • Going through two non-stress tests to check if Caleb was doing okay in my belly.
  • On my due date the doctor suggested I schedule an induction date which made me start to cry. A little part of me didn't want to choose his birthday.
  • There was the Chinese fortune cookies that predicted Caleb would come out next Tuesday and it came true.
  • July 7th last year my water broke in the morning and we checked in the hospital.
  • Kissing Caleb for the first time and wishing him a "Happy Birthday"

Today was spent remembering random things about being pregnant, going through labor, and FINALLY meeting my son. Today I spent hugging and kissing Caleb a little more than usual. I can't wait for tomorrow!

First Haircut

Both Jamie and I are blessed with a full head of hair so there was no doubt in our minds that Caleb would have a lot of hair too. We get a lot of comments about the amount of hair Caleb has from strangers and friends.

I was really hesitant about giving Caleb a haircut. I knew I didn't want to do it because I had a hard enough time trying to cut his fingernails for the first time. The thought of sharp scissors near his eyes and ears made me nervous even if he were to stay still! I also wanted to wait until he was at least a year to have his first haircut. I have no idea why but I just did.

Jamie has been wanting to get his haircut for a while now and I finally agreed. It just so happens that Caleb's nanny is going to beauty school to be a hair stylist. I asked her to bring her shears today to give him a haircut.

Pop! goes the weasel...

We play with this Jack-in-the-box toy and Caleb laughs every time Humpty pops out. Since we've been doing it for a while I think Caleb knows when Humpty is about to pop out. He hasn't figured it out how to work the toy himself but once in a while he'll grab the handle and turn it... just not enough times for Humpty to pop out.

I couldn't remember the whole nursery rhyme so I looked it up on Wikipedia... There are tons of versions!! here's one of them:

All around the mulberry bush
The monkey chased the weasel
The monkey thought 'twas all in fun,
Pop! goes the weasel.

Eleven months.... really?

Caleb turned eleven months old yesterday... On the plane ride home yesterday I snapped a picture of him with my phone and then looked back through the pics I took of him. Holy smokes... he has CHANGED. When he was a newborn his eyes used to be more slanted but seem to have grown rounder. I used to joke that his hairline is receding but now it's grown so long that I admit he should get haircut. He still is long and lean and is possibly over 20 pounds. He's become a more picky eater. If he doesn't like something he will spit it out and/or throw it on the floor. He still loves cheese, bread, and blueberries. He can sign "milk" but only does it when he sees his bottle. He has all kinds of funny expressions. He likes to roughhouse and constantly beats me up but can also be very snuggly. I love it when he crawls up to me, puts his arms around me and gives me a hug. It's simply precious!

Cal Poly motto

My niece Ally has a walker wagon that my sister let us borrow. The wagon has different settings so you can slow it down but I don't know how to change that so I haven't let Caleb try it out because I think it goes fast on our tiled floors and he may slip and hurt himself.

Well the past couple of days he's spotted the wagon in the entryway and has stood up on it each time. Then yesterday I stood in front of the wagon and let it roll a little... just enough for Caleb to take one step. After seeing him push the stool around the kitchen a bit I thought maybe he is ready to push the walker wagon. You never know until you try, right? I also was reminded of Cal Poly's motto - Learn by Doing. (Thanks to Jayden for the CP t-shirt)

btw... A friend told me that you can edit videos on Windows Movie Maker. This video is my first try at doing this. I probably went a little overboard with the transitions and title making... hee hee.

Early stages of walking

So Caleb's been standing up and cruising around on furniture lately. Sometimes he'll fall down and start crawling cause he can crawl pretty fast. Lately he likes to push things around. Chairs, baskets, storage bins, etc etc... This time it's a stool.

Peek a Boo

Caleb and I play peek a boo A LOT. We were doing this for about 5 minutes before I figured I should capture it on video.

Jamie's number one fan

During my pregnancy Jamie would play his guitar and sing to my belly. A lot of times the baby (Caleb) would move around. It was really sweet to think that Caleb could hear Jamie play and sing while in the womb. Now that he's out in the real world we think Caleb really enjoys music and hearing his dad play his guitar and sing.

p.s. (excuse the milk that was spilled on the floor)

10 Months Old!

Caleb turned 10 months this past week. He's doing two things in this picture that he LOVES... playing with balls and standing up. He's also making a lot of different sounds
  1. Da-da
  2. Ba-ba
  3. Na-na-na
  4. Ma-ma-ma
  5. Blowing raspberries
  6. Ya-ya
He likes to eat (not surprising since he's a Breslow and half-filipino). I'm trying to get him to sign "more" instead of banging on his high chair tray. I think his favorite foods are peas, blueberries, and butternut squash. But he'll eat just about anything but he isn't so hot for avocado, green beans or lentils (yet I give it to him anyways!).

Another favorite pastime of Caleb's is chasing our furbaby Raider. He crawls after Raider and Raider has to jump up to higher ground to get away. There have been a few instances where Caleb has actually grabbed his fur. Luckily (and a little surprisingly) Raider has not lashed out.

I get a lot of compliments on the amount of hair that he has and how "grown up" he looks. A friend said he's sporting the Zac Efron hair style. Jamie would like to cut it but the thought of sharp scissors near a baby that won't sit still scares me. As of his 9 month appointment he is 30 inches tall and 19 pounds - tall and lanky. So far he has 3 teeth and a fourth one is imminent. He's beginning to cruise along furniture which is exciting and terrifying at the same time. He goes CRAZY whenever he sees Daddy but I think when he's around a lot of people he doesn't know he'll cling to me.

He doesn't understand the word "gentle" yet since he plays kind of rough by throwing toys and pounds on anything and everything including me. He's pretty fearless and doesn't mind bumping his head in pursuit of what he wants. There is one thing we suspect he is afraid of... my Happy Mother's Day balloon. He seemed to cling to us whenever the mylar balloon was swaying. A ball rolled near the balloon and Caleb didn't go after it as he usually would do. Strange isn't it? I guess everyone has their quirks.

It is amazing to witness him grow and learn and he brings a lot of joy in our lives. We love him so much.
