Jamie's dad wanted to celebrate his 70th birthday by going on a family trip to Mexico. We stayed at the
Grand Velas Resort & Spa in the Mayan Riviera. The trip started a little rough when on Sunday afternoon Caleb woke up from his nap (the first indication) with a fever. During the night his fever spiked so we called a doctor who was supposed to come to our hotel. We put Caleb in a lukewarm bath while we waited for the doctor. The doctor called back and said the taxi never showed up and asked us if we still wanted him to come. By this time Caleb's fever seemed to go down a little. The doctor advised us to keep giving him the Tylenol. On Monday morning, Gail (father in law's girlfriend) woke up feeling horrible and called for a doctor to come. She was given antibiotics for a sinus infection. While the doctor was there we asked him if he could take Caleb's temperature. The hotel had let us borrow a thermometer but we had a hard time reading it and getting Caleb to keep it in his mouth long enough to read it. His temperature was back to normal and he was in much better spirits. We all decided to go to
Tulum to see a small ruin. I was told it was small and I wasn't expecting much but when I got there I was surprised. The area was bigger than I thought with multiple ruins close to the beach. We also encountered some large iguanas. Originally our plan was to go to
XCaret Park after Tulum but we were at the ruin longer than expected and Gail was feeling horrible. Luckily our voucher was good for one week after the date of purchase so we decided to go the following day.
We rented a car and went to
Coba the main ruin that we wanted to see. The unique thing about Coba is you can climb up the ruin. With two young kids we hopped onto a pedicab and was taken to the ruin. The ride was a bit bumpy and a girl on a bicycle crashed into us but it was faster than walking. I decided I want to climb up a little bit of it. I only went up about a third of the way because I didn't want to risk falling down from any higher. After Coba we took the boys to XCaret Park. The best part of the park was seeing the sea turtles of all ages. The baby ones were so cute and the adult ones were so large and amazing.
The following day we took the boys to see a cave. We went on a tour and saw stalagmites and stalactites. It was a pretty cool site to see. Before the tour there was a monkey on the property and he climbed all over Lucas and Lucas did NOT enjoy that. He didn't go near the monkey after that.
The next day we got to leave the boys with Grandpa and Gail and went to Xplor. We went on the zipline course, rafting, and a jungle ride. On the first of seven ziplines I thought to myself, "What the hell am I doing?" I was a bit nervous but after the first one it was easy after that. The boys spent the day trying to fly a kite and swimming in the pool. Jamie and I also had a chance to go to Playa del Carmen for a dinner date. We had lobster and margaritas. Yum!
It was a fun vacation and made us remember Mexico is a great vacation area. Maybe next time we'll go to Cabo.
